3 CAS Scientists Win 2013 TWAS Prizes

Three CAS scientists were honored by TWAS for their research in agricultural science, biology and social science.

AsianScientist (Oct. 9, 2013) – Three researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences were honored at this year’s The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) 24th General Meeting for their scientific discoveries and contributions to R&D.

The 24th General Meeting was held at Buenos Aires, Argentina on September 30, 2013.

Zhu Yongguan of the Institute of Urban Environment, Xu Guoliang of the Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, and Zhang Linxiu of the Center for Chinese Agricultural Policy each won a cash award of US$15,000.

Zhu Yongguan won the 2013 TWAS Prize in Agricultural Sciences for his systematic contribution to the understanding of arsenic dynamics in soil-plant systems, and mitigation of arsenic pollution, particularly in rice.

Xu Guoliang shared the 2013 TWAS Prize in Biology with Sue Duan Lin-Chao of Academia Sinica’s Institute of Molecular Biology in Taipei, Taiwan. Xu was recognized for his contribution to the understanding of the role and mechanism of DNA oxidation in epigenetic regulation of mammalian development. Lin-Chao was honored for her contribution to the molecular mechanisms of RNA degradation machinery during post-transcriptional regulation in bacteria.

Zhang Linxiu was awarded the 2013 TWAS-Celso Furtado Prize in Social Sciences for her policy-relevant studies on rural development in China.

The winners will lecture about their research at TWAS’s 25th General Meeting in 2014, where they will also receive a plaque and the prize money.
