Singapore Top In Asia, 6th Globally For Innovation: Report

Singapore has taken pole position in Asia and scaled up a spot to sixth position among 128 nations in the Global Innovation Index 2016 report.

AsianScientist (Aug. 19, 2016) – Singapore is top in Asia and sixth position among 128 nations for its innovation performance, according to the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2016 report released on Monday this week.

The results, published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), compare the innovation performance of economies worldwide. The Index showed that Singapore is edging closer to innovation giants such as Switzerland, Sweden, the UK, the US and Finland, which claimed the first five spots.

Other Asian countries on the GII 2016 report include South Korea at 11th place, followed by Hong Kong SAR at 14th place, Japan at 16th place, China at 25th place, and Malaysia at 35th place.

GII 2016 also ranked Singapore top in the world in the Innovation Input Sub-Index, which gauges elements in the national economy that enable innovation activities.

Singapore’s most significant improvements since 2015 are seen in five indicators: expenditure on education (up 9 spots), ICT services imports (up 47 spots), intellectual property receipts (up six spots), ICT services exports (up 11 spots), and trademarks by origin (up 11 spots).
