Two Singaporeans Honored For Contributions To Engineering

Cham Tao Soon and Masagos Zulkifli have been honored for their contributions to engineering by The Institute of Engineers, Singapore.

AsianScientist (Jul. 11, 2016)Professor Cham Tao Soon, the founding president of Nanyang Technological Institute and later Nanyang Technological University, was awarded the IES Lifetime Engineering Achievement Award 2016 by The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) at the society’s annual gala dinner.

The award was in recognition of his lifetime accomplishments in engineering that have made a profound impact on industry and community and contributed towards Singapore’s progress.

Mr. Masagos Zulkifli, who is an electrical engineer by training and now Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, was also honored at the event with the title of IES Honorary Fellow, in recognition of his contributions to environment and water resources planning in Singapore.

“Professor Cham Tao Soon and Minister Masagos Zulkifli are highly deserving recipients of the topmost accolades in engineering and IES,” said Mr. Edwin Khew, president of IES.

“We hope that by spotlighting their extraordinary achievements, the younger generation will be inspired to step forth and become engineers to lead Singapore to an even brighter, engineering-enabled future.”

Commemorative plaques were also presented to 50 winners of the Engineering Feats @ IES-SG50 competition, whose projects were identified by the public as having made the greatest impact on Singapore’s economic, infrastructural and societal development since 1965.

Additionally, 50 financially needy students from local polytechnics and universities were presented with IES-SG50 Golden Jubilee Scholarships to help them realize their dreams to become engineers.
