Huawei & BGI Partner On Big Data Genome Storage Project

Huawei and BGI have formed a tag team to develop big data genome storage systems and improve the efficiency of genomic research.

AsianScientist (Oct. 22, 2015) – Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd and the Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) have entered into a partnership agreement to establish a big data genome storage system. The partnership will emphasize gene technology workflow, co-design and to innovate customized large data storage system for research work in genomics.

The agreement was signed at the Shanghai-Huawei Cloud Congress (HCC) held on September 18-19, 2015 and attended by BGI’s CEO Dr. Yang Shuang and Vice-President Fang Lin, Huawei’s IT product line president Zheng Ye-Lai and general manager of mass storage field Xiao-Yi.

“BGI has always aimed to improve analytical work in the field of genomics and to provide better service to the population. Efficiency of genomic analysis has a fundamental impact on the technical output,” said Yang.

Gene technology is a classic framework for the application of big data, from the knowledge of biological samples’ diagnostic tests for infectious diseases to familial diseases, and to the application of preventative diseases and clinical treatment. However, these analyses require the clearance of an enormous volume of data, and this process takes up a lot of time.

Yang continued, “Techniques commonly applied in big data and cloud computing were the ‘spin-offs’ of analysts’ intentions to accelerate their data analysis. Together with Huawei, we hope this cooperation and partnership will create innovative work related to gene technology, and to elevate the efficiency to new heights.”

The Huawei-BGI new partnership is expected to improve efficiency in genomic research, increase output, reduce costings, and benefit members of the general public.
