AsianScientist (Sep. 2, 2014) – On August 24-29th, 2014, Singapore hosted more than 300 high school and first and second year university students at the 8th Asian Science Camp, held at the Nanyang Technological University.
Modeled after the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings, the Asian Science Camp gives talented students across Asia a chance to interact with Nobel prize-winning scientists through a series of lectures and workshops over a five day camp. Run yearly since the inaugural Taipei camp in 2007, previous editions of the Asian Science Camp have been held in Bali (2008), Mumbai (2010), Daejon (2011) and Tskuba (2009 and 2013).
This year’s participants heard from Nobel Prize winners such as Professors Sydney Brenner, Makoto Kobayashi and Akira Suzuki, as well as eminent scientists such as Professors Sow Chorng Haur and Jackie Ying. Aside from lectures and panel discussions, campers had the opportunity to interact with the Nobel laureates in smaller group workshops and also received feedback for their poster presentations. In addition, they also went on lab visits and enjoyed a cultural immersion program.
Participants were not charged a registration fee, and accommodation and hospitality were provided by the camp organizing committee. Participation was by invitation only, with the various educational institutions nominating their own students.
Next year’s Asian Science Camp will be held in Bangkok, Thailand.
