NTT DOCOMO Builds First Multi-Purpose Authentication Device

New device prototype by Japanese mobile solutions provider can activate smartphones or tablets for network access.

AsianScientist (Jun 18, 2014) – Japanese mobile solutions provider NTT DOCOMO has developed a prototype of the world’s first SIM-based authentication device, which is capable of wirelessly activating any compatible smartphone or tablet for network-access authentication.

Called Portable SIM (Subscriber Identification Module), the authentication device incorporates three major modules: SIM card, Bluetooth and near field communication (NFC). Portable SIM records the subscriber’s identity, which the subscriber may use to activate a smartphone by waving the device. It also securely stores multiple credentials such as IDs and passwords, allowing direct application to personal computers and other connected devices that eliminate the need to type in such information when accessing online shopping and other sites.

According to DOCOMO, research and development will continue to identify the key technologies, functions and service applications before the authentication device is finally commercialized.
