AEC Chairman: India To Launch Eight Nuclear Power Reactors
Eight nuclear reactors will be launched at four different sites across India during the 12th five year plan, announced the AEC chairman on Tuesday.
AsianScientist (Oct. 31, 2012) – Eight pressurized heavy water reactors will be launched, each of 700 MW, at four different sites in Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Kaiga in Karnataka during the 12th five year plan, the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, R. K. Sinha, announced on Tuesday.
Addressing a large gathering of nuclear scientists at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) to mark the 103rd birth anniversary of Homi Bhabha, the father of India’s nuclear program, Sinha also declared that the first unit of the 1,000 MW Russian-aided Kudankulam atomic power project in Tamil Nadu is expected to attain criticality shortly, and the second unit early next year.
It may be recalled that the commissioning of the Kudunkulam project suffered a serious setback following protests from anti-nuclear activists who raised doubts about its safety standards in the wake of the Fukushima accident.
He said that light water reactors with international co-operation, each of 1,000 MW or more, have also been planned at Kudankulam, Jaitapur in Maharashtra, Kovvada in Andhra Pradesh, and Mithi Virdi in Gujarat.
The Jaitapur project in Maharashtra, which is expected to be constructed with French assistance, is also mired in controversy following protests from the local population.
Sinha said that nuclear power generation in India is increasing following the improvement in uranium supply from domestic as well as international sources. In 2011-12 it registered an increase of about 23 percent over that generated in 2010-11.
According to him the average annual availability of reactors increased from 83 to 91 percent, while the capacity factor increased from 71 to 79 percent.
BARC director Sekhar Basu announced that “BARC scientists have been named in the first paper published on the discovery of the Higgs Boson.”
The pair of papers were published in the international journal Physics Letters B on September 17, 2012.
Basu further stated that the BARC team in association with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) had supplied 100 silicon sensors to the Large Hadron Collider project which discovered the Higgs Boson.
The main significance of the discovery of Higgs Boson which was announced on July 4, 2012 is expected to provide a deeper understanding of the universe.
