AsianScientist (Jul. 26, 2012) – Baidu-I²R Research Center (BIRC), a joint laboratory established by the A*STAR Institute for Infocomm Research (I²R) and Baidu, Inc., the leading Chinese language Internet search provider, officially opened in Singapore today.
In February this year, a joint-laboratory agreement was signed in Beijing, China by Ms. Wang Mengqiu, Vice President of Baidu, and Dr. Tan Geok Leng, Acting Executive Director of I²R.
Since then, BIRC has started research on human language technology, which include areas such as Southeast Asian Language Resources, Natural Language Processing, Information Retrieval and Information Extraction, and Speech Information Processing.
Specializing in Southeast Asian languages, BIRC undertook a research project on Vietnamese and Thai Language Resources and Processing.
At the BIRC opening ceremony today, A*STAR’s technology transfer arm, Exploit Technologies and Baidu signed a licensing agreement for Baidu to officially adopt I²R’s Vietnamese and Thai Language technology and Speaker Verification technology.
According to the joint press statement, these language technologies are expected to extend Baidu’s Web services to the Southeast Asian market, and further strengthen Baidu’s leading position in Box Computing technology and internet search efficiency.
I²R’s Speaker Verification technology will likely benefit mobile phone owners using the BaiduCloud mobile platform, who can now enjoy secure and personalized mobile services.
