Two Scientists Win China’s Top Science & Tech Award

Two Chinese scientists, physicist Xie Jialin and architect Wu Liangyong, today won China’s top science and technology award, reports China’s official news agency, Xinhua News.

AsianScientist (Feb. 14, 2012) – Two Chinese scientists, physicist Xie Jialin and architect Wu Liangyong, today won China’s top science and technology award, reports the state-run Xinhua agency.

Tuesday morning’s event at the Great Hall of the People was attended by President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao, and other senior leaders.

Each winner was conferred the State Top Scientific and Technological Award and awarded five million yuan (US$794,900).

Xie Jialin, 91, won for his contributions in accelerator physics, accelerator and free electron laser technology. Xie is best known for helping China build its first high-energy electron linear particle accelerator (linac) in 1964 and for designing the Beijing Electron Positron Collider in the 1980s. He was elected into the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1980.

Wu Liangyong, 89, won for his studies of human settlement patterns and urban planning in China.
