#8: Hiroshi Ishiguro (石黒浩), Robotics Scientist

Dr. Ishiguro is one of the pioneers in ‘robotics philosophy.’ He has authored the books Robot to ha nanika? (What is Robot?) and Android Science.

As Director of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory, and Professor of Department of Systems Innovation in the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Osaka University, Dr. Ishiguro has developed the ‘actroid,’ a humanoid robot with lifelike appearance and visible behavior such as facial movements.

In 2005, his team developed a ‘female’ android called Repliee Q1Expo.

Dr. Ishiguro has even made an android that resembles himself called the Geminoid, which was featured in a 2008 BBC documentary called Man-Machine. Check them out in the photo – who’s the robot, who’s the human?
